Colombe, Michel
(ca. 1430-ca. 1512)
   sculptor
   Born in Tours around 1430, Michel Colombe was one of the most famous French Renaissance sculptors of the late 15th century, although, his work has now in part disappeared. He worked for louis xi (ca. 1462) and the duke of Bourbon (1484-88), then, in Tours in 1501, he entered the service of anne of brittany and sculpted the tomb of duke François II and Marguerite de Foix (1502-07), after a model by jean perreal. On the corners of this work, the statues of the four virtues are noted for their fullness and suppleness of design, elegance of line, and serenity of expression. Colombe's art, one of restrained realism, makes the transition between the phase of Gothic "détente" and that of the French Renaissance. It is characterized especially by the adoption of decorative Italian motifs (Relief de saint Georges, carved for the château at Gaillon).
